Julie A. Luft, professor in Science and Maths Education, University of Georgia, has been selected to serve as a Fulbright Specialist 2017 on behalf of the U.S. State Department and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) working at Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) - University of Science.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, University of Missouri PhD student and former VNUHCM instructor, connected Prof. Luft to the Center for Educational Excellence (CEE) to collaborate in designing a training workshop for faculty in Vietnam universities. The workshop focused on using assessment to support learning. Since many tui khi chen hang universities in Vietnam have implemented CDIO framework in designing curriculum, their faculty has struggled with aligning assessment to learning goals and teaching strategies. Prof. Luft came to Vietnam to help them redesign assessments through a series of training workshops in January and July 2017.

Although there were challenges because of different context in higher education between US and Vietnam, the first visit in January was a great success for the participants in achieving understanding on student learning, learning assessment and instruction adaptation. Prof. Luft introduced a variety of assessment tools for effective teaching. Additionally, CEE staff were also provided with professional development program and teacher education training in order to increase the center’s proficiency in supporting the educators throughout Vietnam implement innovative teaching program. It is hoped that the second visit will provide training in successfully development of a lesson plan following CDIO standards.
